Wow, sounds terrific! (Sorry, I’m becoming sarcastic).
If you ever watch TV you’ve probably seen ads for a new drug called Abilify. The commercial goes on to “explain” that the reason for this is that a patient needs more drugs. Abilify is an add-on to an anti-depressant, supposedly making it more effective.
And lastly, Practical Neurology in 2004 stated: “Neurological manifestations of gluten sensitivity are a scientific fact, not a theological issue. Whilst the debate continues, we owe it to our patients to screen them effectively for gluten sensitivity with the simple,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], widely available antigliadin antibody test so that we do not in the meantime deprive them of a harmless but potentially effective treatment in the form of a gluten-free diet.”
The American Journal of Medicine in 2004 studied how well brains of celiacs were perfused with blood. They found a strong association between celiacs eating gluten and brains starved for bloodflow. What about this approach? Why don’t we get to the underlying root cause of the depressive symptoms and address that,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]? And in 25 years that root cause has never been a deficiency of an antidepressant drug?

But no, this ad campaign asks you to suspend such logical thinking. Well keep it suspended so that you won’t hear all the side effects they then list out. Such things as suicidal thoughts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], large weight gain, diabetes symptoms,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], restlessness or jitteriness and last but not least, abnormal muscle movements (these movements can become permanent if Abilify is not stopped quickly)!!
Can I support these statements? You bet!

But there has certainly been a strong cause and effect association between gluten and depression. Am I suggesting that all depression is caused by a reaction to gluten? VISIT ONE - THE SCHOOL CAFETERIA
My first visit was to a club close to the office. It started right after work. That was perfect for me,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
There were sixteen people there. The meeting seemed to be very well organized. I stood to introduce myself,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Would I want to join this club? Maybe. They seemed to be very good. That one officer bothered me. If he didn’t see the meeting as a priority, would the other members?
There were ten people attending. They seemed to be relaxed and having fun. I immediately noticed the chemistry between them. They liked each other. They joked around. One was nicknamed “Cave Man.”
When it was over, the President thanked me for visiting, and adjourned the meeting.
I asked myself – would I want to join this club? Probably not. I didn’t feel very welcomed.
Take your role as a member seriously. Attend as many meetings as you can. Arrive early. Greet the guests and make them feel welcomed. Pay attention during the meeting. Encourage guests to participate.

THE DECISION
I was most impressed with the manual. It made me think that there was some value in Toastmasters.
Whether you are a member of Toastmasters or another organization, every member has a role in recruiting new members. We all play a part in each visitor’s decision to join our club. It is not just the responsibility of the President, or the Vice President Membership.
Just as important, have fun. Relax. Laugh. Be friendly with the other members. Guests notice that, too.
THE BEGINNING
A few minutes later, he asked all guests to leave while the club discussed a new member application. It was just the applicant and me out in the hallway,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], waiting for about ten minutes. I felt even more awkward.
They met in a school cafeteria. There was a good crowd of over twenty people. I sat down. No one spoke to me. The President called the meeting to order. Soon, he asked if there were any visitors. I raised my hand, and stood to introduce myself. I felt a little awkward, but it went okay.
“No,” he said. “Your voice is quiet and monotone. Your hands flail. You say “um” at least once each sentence.”
After the meeting, other members encouraged me to join.
My decision was made. I did visit again to see if things were the same,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. I found I liked these people. I submitted my application and joined at the end of the meeting.
Several members came over to say hello. Someone gave me another guest packet. It was similar to the others,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], although not as clean.
THE MESSAGE
I sat two seats left of a gentleman they introduced as a club vice president. I noticed that throughout the meeting he had his briefcase open and was doing paperwork. I wondered why he wasn’t paying attention to the speakers. Maybe he was – some of the time. I could understand that, as an officer, he would have extra work. But why do it during the meeting?
I was conceived in the Summer 1998. I had given a presentation at a Board meeting that morning. Later, my boss invited me into his office. He said, “Fred. You need Toastmasters.”
Let the officers do their role, too, including giving guest packets and making follow-up contact.
I found another club near work. It met in a classroom of mega-church. I arrived ten minutes early. I was the only one there. Well, I hoped I had the right place and time.
As I was pondering, I got a phone call. It was “Cave Man.” He thanked me again for visiting and encouraged me to return next week.
I found out they took a break for refreshments. That is why their meetings lasted two hours. I wasn’t sure I liked that. I wanted to get home. But, I noticed that they used this time to socialize, get to know each other better, and build a bond.
Would I want to join this club? Maybe. They were very friendly. But were they too relaxed and informal? Were they already a “clique”?
With that, “Toastmaster Fred Haley” was born on October 1, 1998.
ME,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]? I gave a great presentation.
I learned that he was the President. He was also Toastmaster for the day. One of the two ladies would be giving a speech. The other was the evaluator. This was the first time she had ever done that role. She mentioned that she had only given two speeches. I thought she did well, reading and responding to questions in the manual that she also filled out.
Five minutes later, three people came in. One had a bag of supplies. He tried talking to me as he set up the room.
I started my research,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. I found a list of clubs in my area,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. They recommended visiting more than one to find the club that “fits.” This is where the fun began.

At the end of the meeting, the President asked me to comment, and thanked me for visiting. Afterward, he came over, talked about Toastmasters, and gave me a guest packet. He said the club had more members, but many were out on summer vacation.

My third club visit was in a business conference room. I was immediately greeted as I entered. Someone explained about Toastmasters and the meeting. I was given a more extensive guest packet. It even had an application form,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The fourth club was a forty minute drive from home. Their meetings lasted two hours.
VISIT THREE - THE CONFERENCE ROOM
I had my instructions. I didn’t like it, but he was the boss.
The President called the meeting to order. Again, I stood and introduced myself. During the meeting they invited me to participate in their impromptu Table Topics. I declined, but, before the session ended,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and after I had seen what it was about, they again encouraged me to give it a try. I did. I was uncomfortable, and fumbled a lot. I was told later that I spoke for under a minute, and said “um” seven times.
VISIT FOUR - THE CHURCH SANCTUARY
When we returned, they congratulated the applicant for being approved for membership. Then, the meeting started. One speaker gave a memorable “working with words” speech.

Yet, surprisingly, at least 95 percent of Americans report being uncomfortable conversing with strangers. Why?
She discovered that she needed to have icebreakers ready. Using a short list of boilerplate small talk examples, she could tailor a conversation opener to any situation or person. They reflected a variety of open-ended questions and comments for each of three basic topic areas:
Small talk is any superficial personal communication between two or more people. It is the vehicle through which you approach people to test to see if you share interests, attitudes, philosophies, values, histories, and experiences on which you and the other person can build. It is the method by which you discover if you are interested in getting to know the other person better.
The event and environment were guaranteed to give her something in common with the other person because they were experiencing these things together.
In her initial conversations she kept her topics neutral so as not to engender strong emotions and polarize the conversation. Since this is all very tentative at the beginning, when she was not sure there was a match, she remained somewhat impersonal; that is,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], while she was upbeat and enthusiastic, and disclosing to a degree, she did not immediately pour out her innermost dreams and desires to this new person because too much personal sharing too soon can be overwhelming.

But “small” talk is a misnomer. There is nothing small or trivial about it. It is the basis and beginning of every relationship, from personal to professional to business; that is, it is virtually impossible to meet and get to know people without the aid of simple, casual conversation in some format.

Today, much of our communication is automated and anonymous so that our everyday, in-person communication skills with new people become rusty. We become shy and unsure about how to act. Consequently, we discount the necessity of small talk and try to avoid it.
Pauline was tired of staying home or standing on the periphery of conversations at social gatherings, so she decided to become more socially effective. She began to think of being with a group of strangers as being in a rowboat in a sea of interaction possibilities. To move herself forward, she needed to use an oar—the first principle of small talk—observing others, asking questions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and revealing something about yourself.

Recently, several of the yoga coaches I’ve trained were talking about how their class and client numbers are down. I shared a few tips with them about how to bring those numbers back up coming from a dharmic place of service. If that’s also been a challenge for you, this might help.
TWO: Often, marketing gets focused so much on finding new students you might be neglecting your most valuable marketing tool, you class lists. Revisit old class and client lists. Really get in touch with the folks on this list, heart to heart. Look it over and notice whom you feel intuitively drawn to reconnect.
